President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella plans to govern Colombia with Barranquilla as an official alternate seat of the National Government. Barranquilla mayor, Alejandro Char, confirmed this promise during a recent radio interview.

The New Government Headquarters

The decision marks a historic shift in Colombia’s political geography. Barranquilla will host presidential activities outside Bogotá, fulfilling Abelardo de la Espriella’s decentralization agenda. The arrangement must be formalized through a presidential decree, according to Char. The first proposed alternate seat would be the historic Aduana building located on the Plaza de la Aduana. The second proposed alternate seat would be Segunda Brigada – Batallón de Paraíso, which is an army military base off of Vía 40.

Barranquilla

Barranquilla is Colombia’s fourth-largest city and a key economic hub on the Caribbean coast. The city already hosts major national events, including the upcoming 2027 Pan American Acquatics Championship. Its strategic location and infrastructure support its role as a permanent governmental center.

Espriella’s team has already operated from Barranquilla during his campaign and legal career. This move strengthens the city’s political influence and attracts foreign investment. Local leaders see this as a boost for tourism, business, and public services.

What Happens Next

The presidential inauguration will take place on August 7, 2026. On that day, Espriella plans to sign the decree establishing Barranquilla as the alternate seat. Minsters and government officials will begin coordinating operations between both cities.

This strategy aligns with broader efforts to reduce Bogotá’s dominance and empower regional capitals. Citizens in Barranquilla and the Atlántico department expect increased visibility and opportunities.

Barranquilla’s transformation into a governmental hub reflects Espriella’s vision of a more balanced Colombia. The city now stands ready to play a central role in national leadership.
