Barranquilla attracted more than $469 million USD in foreign investment in 2025, confirming its rise as one of the Caribbean’s most dynamic business destinations. The city recorded 23 completed projects and 3,581 direct jobs as per ProBarranquilla.
This result adds to a strong multi-year trend. Between 2021 and 2025, Barranquilla accumulated more than $2.1 billion USD in investment across 144 projects, generating over 14,200 jobs. The last three years produced the highest investment peak in the city’s recent history.
Most of the capital came from abroad. International sources accounted for 83% of total investment, with the United States leading the list. Colombia, Spain, Peru, and Italy also ranked among the main sources of projects.
Main Sectors
Chemicals and life sciences led investment in 2025 with 22% of the total. Food and beverages followed with 13%, while BPO and IT, metalworking, renewable energy, hospitality, and packaging each represented 9%.
Industry remained the main investment engine, accounting for 65.3% of direct investment. Services followed with 30.4%. These sectors reflect Barranquilla’s growing appeal for companies seeking regional expansion and export capacity.
Why Investors Choose Barranquilla
Barranquilla’s logistics position is one of its biggest advantages. The city has eight port terminals, 11 regular shipping lines, and 37 maritime routes. Transit to the U.S. East Coast takes only five to eight days.
The city also offers lower operating costs and a smaller carbon footprint than many Asian routes. Local incentives include 100% exemptions from industry, commerce, and property taxes for up to ten years. These conditions make Barranquilla especially attractive for nearshoring projects.
Challenges and Outlook
Despite strong momentum, local leaders say national regulatory instability is slowing growth. They warn that frequent legal changes make long-term investment decisions harder. Energy projects, including wind and offshore gas, could advance faster with clearer rules.
Barranquilla’s future strategy focuses on three anchor projects: clean energy, digital technology, and aircraft maintenance. The next major investment event will be ExpoProBarranquilla 2026, scheduled for May 13 and 14.
