Barranquilla will host Colombia’s alternate presidential seat at the Segunda Brigada -Batallón de Paraíso. The news was confirmed by Atlántico’s governor, Eduardo Verano. Later, president-elect Abelardo de la Espriella confirmed this decision after evaluating several options.

From La Aduana to Segunda Brigada – Batallón de Paraíso

Officials initially proposed the historic Edificio de La Aduana as the alternate government headquarters. However, new plans now designate the military canton as the official site. This shift surprised many observers who expected the customs building to remain the preferred choice.

The change reflects evolving security and logistical considerations for the incoming administration. Adaptations at the Paraíso battalion began immediately after the announcement.

Strategic Importance for the Caribbean Region

Mayor Alejandro Char emphasized this move strengthens ties between the national government and the Caribbean. He stated that the decree formalizing Barranquilla’s status will be signed on August 7, during the inauguration. Espriella announced his presidential inauguration would take place in Cali.

Furthermore, the alternate seat promises increased investment and visibility for the region. Char noted that ministers already hold meetings in the city, signaling a real decentralization of power.

Security and Infrastructure Priorities

Security remains a top concern for both local and national leaders. Char highlighted discussions with de la Espriella about combating crime and improving public safety. The president-elect pledged stronger operational strategies and intelligence efforts.

Additionally, infrastructure projects such as airport upgrades and road connectivity gained attention. These initiatives aim to integrate Barranquilla more closely with other major cities.

What This Means for Barranquilla

This designation positions Barranquilla as a key political hub outside Bogotá. Consequently, the city expects economic growth and enhanced public services. Moreover, it underscores the administration’s commitment to regional development.

Residents anticipate tangible benefits from heightened governmental presence. The alternate seat symbolizes a broader shift toward inclusive governance across Colombia.
