New York Without a Layover: What’s Coming
Mayor Alejandro Char announced that a direct Barranquilla–New York route is in the works. He made the statement during the 30th National Tourism Congress (ANATO) in late August.
Details remain pending. No airline, start date, or weekly frequency has been confirmed yet. Travelers should treat the announcement as a planned connection rather than a bookable flight.
Still, the vision is clear. New York represents a strategic market for tourism and business. A nonstop would position Barranquilla as a true international gateway for the Colombian Caribbean.
Local tourism leaders welcome the news. Paula Cortés, head of ANATO, called the New York announcement “marvelous” for travel agencies and destination growth.
Beyond Madrid and New York, officials are pursuing connections to Brazil and Buenos Aires. The goal: place Barranquilla at the heart of global tourism flows.
A Direct Link to Europe Starts in December
Air Europa will launch Barranquilla’s first nonstop service to Madrid on December 18, 2026. The route operates three times weekly—Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays—on Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
Flights depart Madrid at 15:25 and land in Barranquilla at 19:35 local time. Return services leave at 21:35 and arrive in Spain at 12:40 the next day.
This connection slashes travel time for Europeans and opens a convenient gateway for Colombians heading to Europe. Madrid also serves as a hub for onward connections across the continent.
