For many travelers, Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport is the first glimpse of Colombia’s Caribbean coast. Now, plans are moving forward for a large-scale modernization project that could transform the gateway to Barranquilla and the wider Atlántico region.
A New Vision for Ernesto Cortissoz Airport
The proposed initiative, known as Puerta de Oro, aims to expand and modernize Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport in Soledad, which serves Barranquilla and surrounding municipalities. The project is currently in the feasibility stage and is structured as a public-private partnership with an estimated investment of COP 3.1 trillion.
Beyond renovating existing facilities, the plan includes new studies, financing, operations, maintenance, and commercial improvements across both the airport’s airside and landside infrastructure.
As per the Agencia Nacional de Infraestructura, “The #ANI will hold a Public Hearing on October 28 for the socialization of the Private Initiative “Puerta de Oro”, a project aimed at modernizing and expanding the infrastructure of Barranquilla’s Ernesto Cortissoz Airport.”
Designed for Future Tourism and Business Growth
Barranquilla has become increasingly attractive to tourists, digital nomads, investors, and international businesses. As a result, airport capacity has become a growing priority.
According to official figures, Ernesto Cortissoz handled more than three million passengers in 2025. Cargo traffic also increased by more than 20,000 tons, highlighting the airport’s expanding role in regional commerce.
The modernization project is designed to accommodate future growth in both passenger and cargo demand. Plans also seek to strengthen the airport’s position as a regional aviation and aircraft maintenance hub while pursuing environmental certifications.

Preliminary designs reveal several improvements aimed at creating a smoother travel experience.
Better Access and Parking
The proposal includes expanded vehicle parking areas and designated spaces for taxi companies. These upgrades are intended to reduce congestion and improve access between the airport and the city.
Enhanced International Facilities
Travelers could also benefit from a larger international pier, additional baggage conveyor systems, more escalators, and new VIP lounges. Together, these features would help modernize the passenger experience and bring the airport closer to the expectations of international visitors.

As Barranquilla continues to grow as a tourism, business, and cultural destination, its airport plays a critical role in connecting the region with the rest of Colombia and international markets.
