Restoration and Urban Renewal at Bocas de Ceniza

Barranquilla is launching a large-scale initiative to restore the Tajamar and Bocas de Ceniza areas, transforming one of its most iconic natural corridors. The project will connect the riverfront to Puerto Mocho, extending the city’s network of sustainable mobility routes, pedestrian spaces, bike paths, and recreational areas.

This ambitious plan aims to make the corridor as walkable as the existing stretch from Las Flores to Puerto Mocho. Visitors and locals will soon be able to explore the Magdalena River’s scenic landscapes and safely reach Bocas de Ceniza, where the river meets the Caribbean Sea. The goal is to promote safe, organized access while enhancing tourism and community life.

The initiative complements other major works such as the Gran Malecón and the Ecoparque Ciénaga de Mallorquín, two flagship projects that have redefined Barranquilla’s sustainable development vision. Both have restored key ecosystems and positioned the city as a leading destination for eco-tourism and environmental education.

A Sustainable Vision for Barranquilla’s Riverfront

Beyond its environmental focus, the Bocas de Ceniza project places strong emphasis on community inclusion. Local fishing families who have lived in the area for generations will benefit directly from new opportunities linked to tourism and conservation. Authorities are working to ensure these residents remain central to the project’s identity while preserving their traditional livelihoods and culture.

For decades, Bocas de Ceniza has faced challenges such as poor infrastructure, limited access, and environmental degradation. This project addresses those issues and advances Barranquilla’s long-term commitment to “reconnect with the river,” a policy that has turned once-isolated waterfront zones into thriving cultural and recreational spaces.

The new corridor will link the river, lagoon, and sea within a single ecological and recreational route, creating a unified narrative of restoration and sustainable development. It aims to strengthen Barranquilla’s reputation as a city that values its natural ecosystems while driving responsible tourism growth.

Although the administration has not announced specific construction dates, officials confirmed the plan will be formally presented soon. Once completed, the Tajamar–Bocas de Ceniza corridor is expected to become one of Colombia’s premier coastal attractions, symbolizing the union of urban innovation, environmental recovery, and community development.

With this vision, Barranquilla continues shaping itself as a model for sustainable coastal cities — and at the heart of that transformation lies Bocas de Ceniza.
