Barranquilla is reinforcing its image as Colombia’s sports capital with a new skatepark at the Gran Malecón. Mayor Alejandro Char led the opening, celebrating another step in urban renewal and youth inclusion. The skatepark is located next to the Shakira statue.
The 2,400-square-meter facility is designed for skateboarding, BMX freestyle, roller freestyle, and skating. It features six areas, including a technical bowl and three free-style zones for all skill levels. The skatepark cost over 4 billion Colombian pesos and is ready to host national and international competitions.
Mayor Char said the project gives young people “a way of life and the chance to become champions.” The skatepark’s location at the Gran Malecón offers easy access from all parts of the city. It provides a safe, family-friendly space that encourages outdoor recreation and social connection.
The inauguration also launched the 2025 Extreme Sports Festival, featuring 150 athletes in skateboarding, BMX, and roller. The event included live music and high-energy exhibitions. National champion Yitza Gutiérrez impressed the crowd with her skills, while Daniela Rubio praised the park’s design and inclusivity.
According to Rubio, the skatepark allows both beginners and advanced riders to improve their techniques. She called it a “beautiful, inclusive space” that introduces more people to extreme sports culture.
Mayor Char emphasized that investing in sports infrastructure means investing in people. “Supporting sports builds stronger families and better citizens,” he said. The project also strengthens Barranquilla’s identity as a modern, active, and inclusive city.
With this new skatepark, Barranquilla reaffirms its commitment to youth, sports, and innovation. The Gran Malecón continues to evolve as one of the city’s most dynamic attractions, promoting health, recreation, and community pride.
