Barranquilla now holds the prestigious LEED Gold for Cities certification from Green Business Certification. This achievement makes it the first Latin American city over one million people to earn this distinction. The city joins an elite group of sustainable urban centers worldwide.
A Milestone for Sustainable Urban Development in Colombia
Barranquilla earned this certification after evaluations measured air quality, energy consumption, and water efficiency. The city also demonstrated excellence in sustainable mobility, waste reduction, and climate resilience. Furthermore, urban planning, public space access, and quality of life scores impressed evaluators. This recognition validates years of focused environmental recovery projects.
The LEED for Cities program, from the U.S. Green Building Council, evaluates overall sustainability performance. Barranquilla became the first Colombian and South American city to formally begin this certification journey in October 2025. Consequently, the city now positions itself among Latin American leaders adopting world-class sustainability standards.
Key Projects Driving Barranquilla’s Green Transformation
Several major initiatives made this LEED Gold certification possible. The city invested over $380 million in green infrastructure, renewable energy, and water management. Crucially, the Ciénaga de Mallorquín restoration project recovered vital ecological assets. Additionally, blue and green infrastructure initiatives combat climate change effects through pollution reduction.
Clean mobility projects and urban modernization efforts also contributed significantly. These transformations reconnect communities with nature while improving resident wellbeing. Therefore, Barranquilla now serves as a regional model for sustainable urban development. This certification opens pathways for other local governments to pursue similar sustainability goals.
The achievement solidifies Barranquilla’s reputation as Colombia’s Caribbean region first city reaching LEED Gold level. Importantly, only a few Latin American cities hold this distinction today. Barranquilla’s success demonstrates that rapid urban growth and environmental stewardship can coexist effectively.
