The Carnaval de la 44 in Barranquilla is a vibrant celebration that showcases the city’s cultural richness. Held annually as part of the larger Barranquilla Carnival festivities, this event focuses on preserving traditional dances, music, and customs.
A Grassroots Alternative to the Main Carnival
While the main Carnaval de Barranquilla features grandiose parades and attracts international attention, the Carnaval de la 44, also known as the Carnaval del Bordillo, emphasizes local traditions and community participation. It offers a more intimate and grassroots experience, highlighting the everyday cultural expressions of Barranquilla’s neighborhoods. Unlike the larger carnival’s events that take place along Via 40, the Carnaval de la 44 primarily unfolds along Carrera 44, a central artery of the city.
The main attraction of Carnaval de la 44 is its lively street parades. Thousands of performers, dressed in colorful costumes, fill the streets with energy and rhythm. Traditional characters such as Marimondas, El Garabato, and Negritas Puloy captivate the crowd. Their dynamic performances blend humor, storytelling, and dance.
Live music forms the heartbeat of this event. Local bands play cumbia, mapalé, and vallenato, drawing enthusiastic crowds. Attendees sway to the rhythms, creating an electric atmosphere. Music groups and solo artists compete, adding an element of excitement.
Food vendors line the streets during the celebration. They offer traditional dishes such as arepas de huevo, butifarras, and empanadas. These delicious treats allow visitors to savor the flavors of Barranquilla while enjoying the festivities.
Community Groups and Cultural Unity
Another key feature is the inclusion of community groups. These groups proudly showcase their unique cultural expressions through choreography and costumes. Their participation strengthens the event’s sense of unity and belonging.
Carnaval de la 44 also serves as a platform to support local artists and businesses. Vendors, performers, and artisans benefit from the influx of visitors. This celebration significantly boosts the city’s economy during the carnival season.
