AmaWaterways recently christened its luxury river ship AmaMelodia in Barranquilla, Colombia, expanding premium Magdalena River cruises for international travelers. This event highlights Colombia’s rising appeal for exclusive river adventures blending culture, nature, and sophistication. The AmaMelodia first set sail in November 2025.

Inauguration Highlights

The April 28, 2026, ceremony in Barranquilla featured cumbia and mapalé rhythms, a traditional blessing by a Tayrona mamo, and speeches from AmaWaterways co-founders Rudi Schreiner and Kristin Karst. Local dignitaries attended, including Atlántico Governor Eduardo Verano de la Rosa, Barranquilla Mayor Alejandro Char Chaljub, and Transport Minister Maria Fernanda Rojas Mantilla. Godmother and Captain Elisabeth Mercado Herrera, Colombia’s first female Magdalena River captain, symbolized empowerment and local talent.

AmaMelodia Features

This 64-passenger intimate ship, designed with Colombian architect Camilo Restrepo, offers twin-balcony staterooms (237-318 sq ft), a sun deck pool, fitness room, spa, and gourmet dining with local flavors. It sails year-round “Magic of Colombia” and “Wonders of Colombia” itineraries from Barranquilla to Cartagena, visiting UNESCO site Palenque, artisan towns like Mompox and Santa Bárbara de Pinto, and La Mojana wetlands for wildlife excursions.
