Barranquilla’s waterfront is preparing to welcome a striking new addition. El Baqan, a large recreational vessel planned for the Gran Malecón, is set to expand the city’s growing mix of tourism, entertainment and riverfront experiences.

The project places a distinctive attraction directly on the Magdalena River. It also reflects Barranquilla’s continuing effort to reconnect the city with its riverfront.

A Hotel and Entertainment Complex on the Magdalena

El Baqan is being developed as more than a conventional hotel. Plans for the project describe a recreational vessel with hospitality, dining and entertainment spaces.

The concept includes hotel accommodation, restaurants, bars, event halls and platforms designed for concerts and other activities. Plans also include recreational areas, with some attractions connected to water sports.

The vessel will be positioned alongside the Gran Malecón, giving visitors direct views of the Magdalena River and the surrounding waterfront.

The project’s river location is central to its identity. Rather than simply overlooking the water, El Baqan is designed to become part of the riverfront experience itself.

Connecting Barranquilla With Its River

The project has been planned as a permanent river-based attraction. Public documentation describes a commercial recreational vessel occupying approximately 14,850 square meters of water near the Gran Malecón.

Access infrastructure is also part of the approved plans, including platforms connecting the vessel with the waterfront. The original authorization established an 18-year term for the project and its associated infrastructure.

That connection could give visitors another reason to spend more time along the river.

Another Attraction for the Gran Malecón

El Baqan joins a waterfront that has steadily added attractions, restaurants, public spaces and entertainment options. The Gran Malecón has become one of Barranquilla’s most recognizable visitor areas.

Local reporting has also highlighted El Baqan alongside the Luna del Río as part of the waterfront’s expanding collection of attractions.

For tourists, expats and residents, the project could eventually offer a new way to experience Barranquilla’s relationship with the Magdalena.

As construction progresses, attention will now turn to the final design, opening timeline and the visitor experiences ultimately offered aboard El Baqan.
