Colombia v. Uzbekistan: Colombia Sparks World Cup 2026 With Debut Victory and Group K Lead

Colombia returned to World Cup action after eight years and immediately claimed top spot in Group K. The national team defeated Uzbekistan 3-1 in their opening match at the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

Luis Díaz Lights Up His World Cup Debut With Goal and Assist

Luis Díaz delivered an unforgettable World Cup entrance with a goal and an assist for Colombia. The Bayern Munich star received a brilliant through ball before Daniel Muñoz scored Colombia’s first goal in the 40th minute with an acrobatic finish. Díaz then broke the tension when his close-range strike deflected off goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov’s hands and trickled across the line in the 65th minute.

Uzbekistan equalized briefly when Abbosbek Fayzullaev headed in a rebound after Camilo Vargas committed a costly error in the 59th minute. However, Díaz quickly responded to ease the nerves of the largely Colombian crowd. Colombia secured the 3-1 victory when Jaminton Campaz headed in Juan Camilo Hernández’s cross from the right wing in the 98th minute.

Colombia Dominates Possession While Leading Group K

Colombia controlled the match throughout the first half with rare defensive pressure. The team managed superior offensive possession against Uzbekistan, a World Cup debutant led by Italian world champion Fabio Cannavaro. Despite dominating, Colombia struggled to penetrate Uzbekistan’s low defensive block until Muñoz’s breakthrough.

The victory positions Colombia at the top of Group K with three points from one match. Portugal and DR Congo both hold one point each from their 1-1 draw, while Uzbekistan sits at zero points. This result continues Colombia’s impressive national record of 28 games unbeaten before their recent loss.

Coach Né Lorenzo’s team faces DR Congo next on Tuesday, June 23 at 9 PM in Guadalajara. Colombia will also play Portugal on June 27 at Miami Stadium to close their Group K campaign. This win marks Colombia’s first World Cup goal since returning to the tournament after Russia 2018.

The passionate Colombian fans filled Mexico City and created an incredible party atmosphere at the legendary Azteca stadium. This emotional return confirmed that World Cup football truly gets missed when teams don’t participate.
