Permanent Resident visa
To obtain a permanent resident visa in Colombia, individuals must first hold a Migrant (M) visa for a certain period, typically three to five years, depending on the visa category. Exceptions apply to certain categories, such as parents of Colombian children or foreign nationals married to Colombians. Applicants must provide proof of income or financial stability, a valid passport, a clear criminal record, and meet other requirements based on their specific visa type. After receiving permanent residency, holders are allowed to live and work in Colombia indefinitely, but they must renew their residency card every five years.
Permanent Resident visa transfer [TRASPASO]
A foreigner who received a permanent resident visa on October 22, 2022 or earlier, is required to submit an application for a visa transfer, or a TRASPASO, as it is known, in order to keep their PR visa active. Student Visa
The Colombian Student Visa (Visa Tipo V – Estudiante) is available to foreigners who wish to study in Colombia. This visa is typically granted to those enrolled in formal education programs such as universities or institutes. The visa duration usually matches the length of the academic program.
Marriage Visa
The Marriage Visa (Visa Tipo M – Cónyuge) is intended for foreigners married to Colombian citizens. This visa allows the spouse to live and work in Colombia. Proof of marriage, such as a marriage certificate, is required to apply. The Marriage Visa is typically granted for three years, after which the holder can apply for permanent residency.
Permanent Partner Visa
The M-Type (Migrant) Permanent Partner Visa in Colombia (Visa de Compañero Permanente de Nacional Colombiano), is designed for individuals who are in a permanent relationship (a recognized domestic partnership) with a Colombian citizen. In order to qualify for this visa, an union martial de hecho must be filed with a notary public for a minimum period of one year before applying. The visa is usually issued for a period of one year and is renewable.
Digital Nomad Visa
A relatively new addition, the Digital Nomad Visa (Visa Tipo V – Nómada Digital) targets remote workers who wish to live in Colombia while working for a foreign employer or as freelancers. This visa is usually valid for up to two years provided the applicant maintains an insurance policy for the same length of time. The Digital Nomad Visa is particularly appealing to individuals seeking a low-cost living environment while maintaining their remote work lifestyle.
Parent of a Colombian Child Visa
If you are a parent of a Colombian child, you may apply for the Parent of a Colombian Child Visa (Visa Tipo M – Padre o Madre de Nacional Colombiano por Nacimiento). This visa allows you to live and work in Colombia to support your child. Proof of the parent-child relationship, such as the child’s Colombian birth certificate, is required. This visa is often granted for three years and can lead to permanent residency.
Retirement or Pensioner Visa
The Colombian retirement visa (Visa de Residente Pensionado) is ideal for foreign retirees who wish to settle in Colombia. To qualify, applicants must provide proof of a lifetime pension, such as Social Security or a private pension, of at least three times the current Colombian minimum wage. In 2024, this total $3,900,000 COP or apprxoimately $930 USD. This visa allows for long-term residency. The process requires submitting financial documents, a clean criminal record, and health insurance. After five years of residency, visa holders may apply for permanent residency. Colombia’s low cost of living, favorable climate, and welcoming culture make it a popular choice for retirees.

Additional Fees and Expenses
Prices listed above do NOT include the visa study fee or visa fee. These fees are paid separately and billable to the client. In addition, expenses such as notarizations, apostilles, and translations into Spanish, among others, are billed separately at the current rate charged by our third-party partners. - State Notarization and Apostille: $150 USD (delivery time: ~1 day to 4 weeks depending on the state)
- Federal Apostille for FBI Background Check or Social Security Benefit Letter: $150 USD (delivery time: ~3-4 weeks).
- Official Translations into Spanish: $15 USD per page (delivery time: 2-3 business days)
