AmaWaterways, the world’s leading luxury river cruise company, launches its first itinerary in Colombia — sailing along the iconic Magdalena River.  The ship set sail from Cartagena on Saturday, April 12th and will arrive in Barranquilla on Saturday, April 18th.

Cruise Ship Features

The AmaMagdalena, one of the two ships specially designed for this journey, offers 30 cabins for 60 guests, while the AmaMelodía offers 32 cabins for 64 guests. On April 19th, the ship will set sail back to Cartagena. In the second half of 2025, the arrival of the AmaMelodía will double the frequency of these cruises, allowing Barranquilla to welcome visitors from around the world every week.

Each ship features a spa, a gym, and a wellness program led by a Colombian host. Two onboard restaurants serve guests, including a tasting menu inspired by Colombian flavors.

The ship reflects a strong collaboration with local artisans. It was designed with Colombian craftspeople and led by architect Camilo Restrepo. The vessel blends regional woodwork with sophisticated, modern style. Handcrafted interiors were created by Ocean Projects, a design studio based in Cartagena. Casa Schlegel Donado of Barranquilla built the ship’s detailed and elegant staterooms. Every corner highlights the story of local talent and cultural heritage.

The cruise line’s arrival in Colombia and the launch of this Magdalena River itinerary open a new chapter in the history of river tourism in Latin America. After six decades, the majestic Magdalena River is about to make history by welcoming the first luxury cruise ship to sail through several departments of Colombia’s Caribbean region.

Although initially scheduled for November 2024, the maiden season of the Magdalena River cruise was postponed to refine the route further.
