Barranquilla is set to welcome a major new tourist attraction: the “Luna del Río” Ferris wheel, rising 65 meters tall beside the Crystal Pavilion at the Gran Malecón. This giant observation wheel, assembled locally using parts manufactured by the renowned Italian company Fabbri Group, is expected to boost the city’s economy and tourism sector, generating new jobs and doubling visitor numbers.
Mayor Alejandro Char emphasized that this landmark project aims to transform Barranquilla’s tourism landscape and provide local and international visitors with a spectacular 360-degree view of the Magdalena River and the city skyline. The Luna del Río Ferris wheel will feature 44 air-conditioned cabins, each accommodating up to six people, for a comfortable 15- to 20-minute ride experience.
“This massive project comes from one of the top manufacturers in Italy, with thousands of components coming together here to create a new city icon. Luna del Río marks a new era for tourism and recreation in Barranquilla,” stated Mayor Char.
Rumors regarding the new Ferris wheel started circulating at the end of August when a viral video was posted to social media.
A New Icon for Barranquilla Tourism
-
The Luna del Río observation wheel is projected to become one of the five largest Ferris wheels in Latin America, weighing 262 tons and offering a panoramic experience with fully transparent cabins.
-
The wheel’s continuous movement enables simultaneous boarding and disembarking, and its vibrant LED lighting will illuminate evenings, reflecting the spirit of special events in the city.
-
Surrounded by a landscaped park, commercial spaces, and green areas, the area is designed as a hub for both residents and tourists.
Economic Impact and Local Pride
-
Barranquilla’s authorities estimate the annual number of visitors to the Gran Malecón will double from 1 million to 2 million, driving growth across public transportation, gastronomy, commerce, and hospitality.
-
According to Mayor Char, household spending on recreation and entertainment in Colombia has doubled in the past five years, making tourism investment a key driver of job creation and urban development.
-
“Like the Gran Malecón, Luna del Río symbolizes Barranquilla’s growth, culture, and connection to the Magdalena River. We hope to start testing the wheel within the next 45 days—adding one more reason to visit, enjoy, and discover Barranquilla,” the mayor concluded.
