The Barranquijazz Festival stands as one of the most significant Latin jazz events in both Colombia and the Caribbean, set to return in September 2024. Since its inception in 1997, the festival has been held annually during the second week of September. Its primary goal is to foster a deeper appreciation for jazz and regional music by highlighting a mix of African and Caribbean rhythms, including Cuban beats, salsa, mambo, bolero, charanga, cha-cha-cha, and more.

The event is organized by the Cultural Foundation Nueva Música, which has been under the leadership of Samuel Minski for more than 12 years. While the festival typically spans various locations, this year’s key performances will be hosted at Teatro José Consuegra and the Malecon del Río. Additionally, other free events will take place during the festival across different venues in the city.

Why is it worth going?

Notable activities include the main concerts, which span four days and are held at the main auditorium of Teatro Jose Consuegra Higgins. Another highlight is “Barranquijazz a la Calle,” a two-day event featuring live performances in various open-air venues during the day. The final “Barranquijazz a la Calle” concert, held at the Malecon del Río this year, is expected to draw a crowd of around 10,000 attendees.

In addition to the performances, the festival also hosts talks and workshops aimed at musicians and students in the city. These sessions offer masterclasses led by esteemed international artists participating in the festival, covering a range of topics from jazz production to performance techniques.
